Our Shepherds

On June 13, 2021 Jerry Crolius and Daryl Townsend were appointed to serve the Lord’s church at Middleburg as shepherds (pastors, overseers, elders – 1 Peter 5:1-3; Acts 20:17,28; Titus 1:5-7). Jerry and Daryl will continue also to serve the church as full-time evangelists, with Daryl’s focus in the N. Florida prison system.

Shepherds are distinguished from evangelists (Ephesians 4:11) by their work as overseers and by their qualifications (1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-8). For example, young Timothy was not qualified to serve as a shepherd (pastor) for the church at Ephesus – he was too young, he was unmarried, and he had no children. However, Timothy served the church as an evangelist. If one meets the qualifications for a shepherd, one may serve as an evangelist and a shepherd, as is the case with Jerry and Daryl.

    What is the one church that belongs to Christ?

    • God's family, individual members of the one body of Christ, united together by the truth of God's Word.
    • Imperfect but penitent believers who have died with Christ in baptism.
    • Not a group of local churches formed into a division/denomination.
    • Not a collection of divisions/denominations.
    • Disciples of Jesus who love one another and all people. We all need grace, help, encouragement, instruction, and correction.
    • Heirs of eternal life with God.
